Green Choices

GREEN Choices: Responsibly Harvesting Western Wood Species

Have you read a lot about Eco-friendly, Green products and still feel just as confused as you were before you started? What GREEN is all about is being smart and efficient in everything we do.

If you know that a forest can be managed in a better way, use that knowledge for the improvement of your product, the health of the environment and the longevity of the resource even if it costs you a little bit more. Too many products are being created under the guise of GREEN but the costs are exorbitant and unrealistic for most. Instead, Harvest Timber Co. chooses to acknowledge the value in being conservative and responsible with the resources we’ve been given. We join our customers in the commitment to make sensible choices in sustainable materials, and efficient practices with an ongoing effort to learn and improve. Read below to better understand responsibly harvest wood as a renewable resource.

Today’s sustainable forestry practices ensure a perpetual abundance of Cedar and Douglas Fir from North America’s forests. Wood substitutes like wood plastic composites are manufactured from materials extracted from the earth — once removed, they can never be replaced. And when substitute products ages beyond their useful life, they become part of landfills. As a natural product, cedar is fully biodegradable. Substitute products also require huge amounts of energy to manufacture compared to cedar products. Add it all up and cedar is the environmentally responsible choice for your home, hands down. In addition, most of our products can be specified either reclaimed or FSC Certified per the project requirements.

Responsibly Harvested Wood: A Renewable Resource

Wood building products are derived from a renewable resource. They grow from the earth, are harvested, manufactured and used for decades or even centuries. Then, when their useful life span is ended, they return to the earth.

This natural life cycle explains why responsibly harvested and sustainable wood building products are the environmentally sound choice when compared with alternative materials like concrete, plastic or metal. Only wood comes from a renewable, biodegradable resource. Today’s sustainable forestry practices ensure a perpetual abundance of high-quality wood from North America’s forests. Aluminum and concrete come from materials extracted from the earth. Once removed, they can never be replaced. Plastics are derived from dwindling petroleum reserves.

Of each tree harvested, 95% goes into useful products. The remaining 5%, the branches, is left on the forest floor to biodegrade into rich compost for the next crop.

Concerned about tomorrow? Sustainable wood is on your side.
