| Installer/Owner
Responsibility Since
Pioneered Wood flooring is made of natural materials with
natural variations in color, grain and texture, industry
standards allow
manufacturing and material grading deficiencies up to 5%.
The installer takes responsibility for final inspection
of all materials
for grade, manufacture and factory finish. The installer
must use reasonable selectivity and hold out or cut
off pieces with
deficiencies, whatever the cause, before installing as
part of the floor. When
flooring is ordered, add 10% to the actual square footage for
cutting and grading allowance, add 15% for critical applications
or custom orders.
General
Installation Tips Floor
should be installed from several cartons at the same time
to ensure good color and shade mixture. Stagger the
ends of boards
at least 6”, when possible, in adjacent rows. Wide spans (over
15’) may require the addition of internal or field expansion.
This can be accomplished by using spacers, such as small
washers, every 10-20 rows inserted above the tongue and
removed after
several adjoining rows have been fastened. While installation
parallel to the longest wall is recommended for best visual
effect, the flooring should be installed perpendicular
to the flooring
joists unless subfloor is reinforced.
In
addition to conventional nailing per NWFA standards, appropriate
elastomeric builder’s adhesive may be applied to the ends
and back of each board or to the subfloor. A quality recommendation
for adhesives is Bostik-Findley’s “Bostik’s
Best(PDF)” elastomeric. Some climates are not condusive
to the use of adhesives due to the dramatic changes in
air moisture
content. Use of stain, filler or putty stick for touch-up
during installation is normal procedure. Avoid striking
the edge of
flooring with the fastener’s mallet by using a block as
cracks and splinters can occur. Cover faceplates with protective
material
to prevent damage to the surface. Use the proper-sized
adapter plate for 3/4” material. Set pneumatic pressure
at 70 PSI and adjust until staples set properly.
Pre-Installation All
outside doors and windows must be in place. All concrete, masonry,
drywall, paint must be completed and thoroughly dry. Install
base molding after flooring installation is complete. Basements
and crawl spaces must be dry and well ventilated. Permanent air
conditioning and heating systems should be in place and operational.
Store flooring away from moisture, off concrete and in a controlled
environment. The
installation site should have a consistent room temperature
above 65ˇ F with ambient humidity of 35-55% for 14 days
prior, during and until occupied, to allow for proper acclimation. Flooring
should be removed from cartons, racked and allowed to acclimate
for 72 hours or until it meets required moisture content.
-
Clean
subfloor -
Scraped, vacuum cleaned, level and free of wax, paint, oil,
sealers, adhesives, curing agents or any debris that would
affect good adhesive adhesion.
-
Structurally
sound subfloor -
Nail or screw any loose areas that squeak. Replace any water-damaged,
swollen or delaminated sub flooring or underlayments.
-
Dry
subfloor -
Check moisture content with the appropriate moisture meter.
Subfloor moisture content must be within 5% of average local
humidity. Flooring must be installed on or above grade level. Do
not install in full bathrooms or below grade. Installing
solid wood flooring over radiant heated subfloors is not
recommended.
